John P. Barrett, CPA

John Barrett is the principal consultant at BlueStopper. He is a CPA with over 25 years of experience with a variety of companies and industries. He is uniquely qualified to help his clients sort out the complexities of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan’s discounts and administrative costs.

During the course of his career John worked at BCBSM two different times, once as an Internal Auditor and most recently as the Director of Medicare Advantage and Part D Compliance. John understands BCBSM’s internal processes and how their business model works.

As Director of Health Benefits Audit for Kmart, John coordinated an audit of BCBSM and participating plan claims discount retention that resulted in a settlement of $10,000,000.

At Ameritech John’s audits of claims payments resulted in settlements from BCBSM in excess of $1,000,000. In addition, John performed a claims audit of BCBSM at Kmart Corporation that resulted in another settlement in excess of $1,000,000. John also performed claims audits of Aetna and Cigna while at Kmart.

John has been a presenter at a national internal audit conference speaking on the topic of health care claims auditing. He was also a member of the Healthcare Audit Roundtable, which was a consortium of companies that met periodically to discuss best in class techniques for auditing heath care costs.
